Let's suppose that the class is on American history, or sociology, or economics. A group of middle class white students, led by a middle class white professor, can completely miss some aspects of the issues. I'm not saying this to put them down. All of us have blind spots.

Since they have never had certain experiences, they can easily fall into stereotypes. Why are some people on welfare? Why are some people poor? What values do poor people have? Why is black unemployment always twice as high as white unemployment? What are the fundamental power relationships within our society? What is the relationship between race and class? What is the function of racial conflict in our society? Here's where a black perspective can help.
