Let me take the principle and put it in terms of schools and employers because most of the arguments about affirmative action arise when we are talking about giving a preference to blacks applying for jobs or professional schools. This is the narrowest principle I can think of, and I think everyone can agree to it as far as it goes. Here it is: "In those cases in which a school or employer has discriminated against blacks in the past, it is fair to allow or require that same school or employer to compensate the blacks it discriminated against. The compensation might include hiring, admission, or promotion." This is a place to start. We can change the principle if we need to do so.
