What is to be Done? (Dee Speaking)

We should be thinking of the things that CAN be done about racism and sexism on campus without restricting speech. I think there are lots of things we can agree to, and that's where our energy should go. All this arguing about speech codes is diverting valuable resources away from more important problems on campus and in society at large.

I suggest that we should concentrate on the following:

• Enhancing the opportunities for blacks and women to express their views on political and other issues
  
• Teaching more about race and cultural differences to all students in many different classes wherever they are relevant. This is especially important in history, political science, sociology, art history, music, and literature.
  
• Incorporate teaching about free speech, rights, constitutional doctrine, and theories of ethics into classes when possible. We have a controversy on campus about hate speech, equality, and individuals. We should be analyzing it, teaching about it, bringing in the relevant historical, legal, and philosophical views so that students get a much deeper understanding of what is happening right here and how.
  
• Enhancing the educational opportunities for black students. Getting black students into mathematics, computer science, and the physical sciences. We should have more innovative programs such as getting black and white students into the same study groups.
  
• Better tutorial programs for students who are having academic trouble.
  
• Recruit more black students and faculty.
