I agree that race isn't relevant. But WHY isn't it relevant? To be honest, I'm not exactly sure about that.

Let's say we're talking about hiring someone. We could say that being white or black doesn't normally have anything to do with being able to do a job. Is that why race is irrelevant?

What if the owner says "Look, I don't feel comfortable around black people. That's why I don't hire them." Or what if he says "Look, this is my business and I can hire anybody I want. I can hire all Italians or Hungarians if I want to. It's none of your business." Or perhaps the owner, or some people in the state legislature, say that they have a social ideal that includes white people having power over black people because they believe that white culture is superior to black culture. What might we say?
