I like John's distinction. The deeper form of color-blindness would eliminate a lot of unfairness in current practices. And I'll agree that a lot of it is unintentional, too. That's why we need the statistics as a flag to identify cases where unintentional discrimination may be going on.

But remember that this sort of "corrective" adjustment to hiring practices mainly impacts the future. It doesn't make up for the past. Many companies have used these indirectly discriminatory practices for years. When that's true, we have to consider compensation. And that compensation could take various forms including job preferences designed to bring the numbers up to what they would be if these practices had never been used.
