We can do that. Principles have value. But I can't help but wonder why we suddenly have to re-examine principles whenever somebody wants to do something serious about racial inequality. We've had all kinds of programs for veterans since at least the second world war --and nobody has suggested that we have to go slowly and proceed with philosophical exactitude. We've poured tons of money into social security without the benefit of any "principle of security." (And it is quite clear that many people have received much more than they put into the social security system.) Isn't it suspicious that we suddenly have to be philosophically cautious and correct when we are talking about compensation for blacks?
