Liberals are faced with a paradox! For liberal society to flourish, large numbers of people must participate politically, express their ideas, and in general exercise their freedoms. Stigma, constructed in part through hate speech, prevents many from doing exactly that. On the other hand, suppressing hate speech violates a liberal principle. As a result, if we follow liberal principles we cannot have liberal society!

Another way to put it is that freedom for some destroys freedom for others. How are we to choose?
