Let's take one kind of equality: equality of opportunity. What does it mean? As a libertarian I would say that people have equality of opportunity when the following conditions are met:

• They have the same legal rights or freedoms and those rights are equally protected by government.

• There are no legal restrictions on, say, going to college or moving to another part of the country or starting a business or selling your labor or the products of your business.

• The government does not formally discriminate on the basis of those facts about people that are clearly irrelevant to its legitimate purposes. This would mean, for example, that the government does not discriminate on the basis of race when hiring its own employees.

Under these circumstances, men and women, blacks and whites, would have the same rights and the government would be just as zealous to protect the rights of a black man as a white man. Many forms of state discrimination would be impossible. For example, no state school could discriminate on the basis of race or sex. Private parties, on the other hand, could discriminate as they wished.
