I'm confused by some of the things Vera and Malik have said about "equality." What is it? It seems to me that we first have to define the kind of equality we are talking about or what we mean by equality in a certain context. Otherwise, we can't communicate. I can think of lots of different kinds of equality or inequality. They are all politically important, and I'm sure there are many others.

  • Equality before the law
  • Equal legal rights
  • Equal moral rights
  • Equal economic opportunity
  • Equal access to education
  • Equality with respect to some variable trait such as income, wealth, education, political influence, etc.

With each of these we can ask for a further analysis. We can also ask, in some cases, why there is inequality or why the degree of inequality changes over time, or how to reduce or increase inequality. We can also ask what the relationship is between a specific kind of equality and hate speech. But first we have to decide what kind of equality we are talking about. My complaint about some of the things Malik and Vera are saying is that they refer to "equality" without saying what kind of equality they are referring to.
