I support academic freedom in most cases. In fact, under the right
circumstances, I would support Devin's academic freedom. If black
people and white people were truly equal in our country, if they
had the same wealth and power and status, I think Devin's ideas
would be just a joke. But that's not the way things are.
In the concrete situation in which we find ourselves, I think
Devin's tenure should be revoked for two reasons:
- His work does not meet professional academic standards. It is poorly documented and racially biased. The best sociologists don't take people like Devin seriously.
- Even if Devin were up to snuff methodologically, there is the problem of harm and reparations. I think we have got to limit the expression of racist ideas until we undo the results of 300 years of racial discrimination and exploitation. If and when we have repaired the damage done by that history, it won't matter much what people like Devin teach. Then he will be just a curiosity. But we're not there yet.
