I want to make another comment. Another purpose for this university and others is to develop the character of its students. I'm not suggesting that the university scrutinize everyone's moral qualities, get in their bedrooms, and all that. But it is undeniably true that the students of today will live in an increasingly diverse society.

Not only will there be more people of color who have come here from all over the world, but more people - especially women - will be in non-traditional roles. Some basic attitudes and values appropriate for such a society should be taught. In particular, our students should be taught the basic respect for others that is necessary for such a society to function well and serve us all. A code like this, properly drawn, can help to teach and reinforce those values.
