The last time we met we talked about the virtues
of a liberal policy on free expression. We discussed some of the
standard arguments in favor of that kind of policy. I thought
everyone was in favor of a liberal policy for various reasons.
Now the university adopts a speech code and it turns out that
Ann, Vera, and Malik support it.
What is the connection between what we said about the value of a liberal policy on free expression and the positions we're taking on the speech code today? Are we being consistent?
One more thing. Let's hold off on discussing this as a legal issue and, in particular, a First Amendment issue. That's one way to look at it; but let's try to be a little broader right now.
