I think you're wrong. The kind of racism you're talking about
is sometimes called "attitudinal" racism. It consists
of negative attitudes toward people because of their race, sometimes
combined with the assumption that they are intellectually inferior.
If we take a broader view and look at the history of the last
50 or 60 years, it's pretty clear that the amount of that sort
of thing has been reduced enormously.
Go back 75 years and most white people thought blacks were inferior
in any number of ways. Some didn't even want to work in the same
room with blacks. Many whites said they wouldn't shop in a store
where there were black sales clerks. Today these things are regarded as absurd.
The vast majority of white students here want black students to
succeed. They sincerely believe in equal opportunity without regard
for race or color. Most of them are embarrassed by what happened
Saturday and condemn it.
My point is that what happened Saturday should be seen for what it is - the unfortunate actions of a handful of crude individuals with bad attitudes.
