| As a utilitarian, I
believe that the goodness and badness of acts (or types of acts) is
determined by their consequences for human welfare. Morality should be
designed to maximize human welfare. Justice is a part
of morality, and it is
established to achieve the same goal as morality in general. If we know the goal, we can also
determine the proper treatment when cases are unequal.
The proper treatment is the treatment that achieves the overall
goal of a system of justice.
