Equal Treatment

(Return to main path)

Ann Speaking
As a utilitarian, I believe that the goodness and badness of acts (or types of acts) is determined by their consequences for human welfare. Morality should be designed to maximize human welfare. Justice is a part of morality, and it is established to achieve the same goal as morality in general. If we know the goal, we can also determine the proper treatment when cases are unequal.

The proper treatment is the treatment that achieves the overall goal of a system of justice.
