The problem, my dear Fred, is that you want foundations that don’t exist. For thousands of years human beings have wanted to find the foundations for their morality outside themselves -- in God, in nature, in metaphysics, or in conceptual analysis.

There are no such foundations. All of those arguments have been criticized to death. We can only begin with real people in particular situations. In other words, we can only begin with ourselves.
