I think we need to know more about the differences. The anthropologists have done a good job of describing all kinds of differences. But suppose what looks at first like an important difference is really only the application of the same fundamental principle to different situations? Then the differences are not fundamental and probably not very important. I don't think Herskovits addressed this issue.

So my questions are these:

• What does it mean to say that differences between moral systems are fundamental?
• Are the existing differences - about polygamy for example - fundamental?
