I think we should all pay close attention to what Wong is saying here.

I think it is important because it goes beyond the usual rhetoric about respecting the values of others. In our society it is commonly agreed that we should legally tolerate a wide variety of opinions. We sometimes add that we should respect not only the right to hold those opinions but the people who hold them.

Wong is going one step further. He is saying that if ethical relativism is a correct meta-ethical theory, and if we accept the justification principle, we ought to give moral weight to the fact that rational people disagree with us and cannot be persuaded by our arguments. In other words, in our own moral arguments the fact that others take a different view should have a certain weight and in some cases change our conclusions.

That means, for example, that in devising public policy on abortion, pro-choice people ought to give weight to the fact that there are thoughtful people who disagree with them. And, of course, pro-life people ought to give weight to the fact that there are thoughtful people who disagree with their view.
