You're right that not just any diversity matters. You're also right that it is liberals who usually make the diversity argument for affirmative action, but it's not just a way to help the groups they like.

We're trying to identify the divisions that are tearing America apart and also the points where more understanding and respect will pay the greatest dividends in our economy and politics. To make America productive and stable in the future, blacks and whites have got to learn to respect each other's culture and perspective. That's why diversity of race matters more than, say, diversity of religious views.

It's our fault if we have sometimes talked as if just any diversity mattered.
