I'm interested in one thing you said, Fred. You think that the self-esteem of black students will suffer if they go to a place like Harvard through an affirmative action program. I know you're sincere, but it amazes me that so many white people have developed so much concern for black self-esteem. Do we have reason to believe that there is a problem?
Do you have the same concern about the children of white alumni who are let into Harvard using lower standards? I've never heard of anyone worrying about the self-esteem of little Johnny Rich Kid who gets into Harvard because his father went there. Or what about the in-state kid who is let into Michigan using a lower standard than the one used for out-of-state kids? Or the athlete who is let in despite a poor academic record? I don't hear of anyone concerned about their self-esteem.
Why is there so much concern about black kids?
