I know that we are not talking about motives here. We're trying to talk in a rational way about what is right and wrong or good and bad. But I would like to make a comment about motives anyway.
To a lot of black people, this sudden outpouring of concern for our self-esteem sounds suspicious. Many of us find it hard to believe that a concern about how we feel about ourselves is really important to a lot of whites. On the other hand, we know that there has always been opposition to any policy that would improve our political and economic position. You'll have to forgive me for wondering if this concern about self-esteem isn't just the latest form of opposition.
