I think that Malik is right that some black students, professors, and managers bring fresh perspectives into the school or the office. But I'm still not clear on the PRINCIPLE behind the diversity argument.

There are lots of ethnic groups and ideas that are poorly represented in our major universities --both in the student bodies and on the faculties. Why not have programs to increase the number of Slavs or Italians? Why shouldn't we increase the number of Evangelical Christians or libertarians or creationists? It would certainly add diversity of one kind or another. So the question is this: Why should we use strong affirmative action to promote diversity based on race or sex but not other kinds of diversity? What's the principle involved?
