I haven't even mentioned all of the beneficial consequences yet.
Most people consider it good to reduce poverty and inequality. Whether we look at it in terms of traditional American values or simply as utilitarians who want to reduce human misery, both of these results have to be counted as important benefits.
Strong affirmative action, including the programs that create role models and other programs aimed at poorer blacks, should reduce both. That brings us closer to a social ideal that most Americans share.
