I'm of two minds about this. I'm proud of the intellectual achievements of black people --and that means I'm proud of the differences among black writers and leaders. I hate the racist idea that blacks all think alike.

At the same time, I believe that we need unity because our gains are still fragile. And I wish the unity were greater than it is.

I believe that there is something that many blacks can bring to a university or a business office that most whites will not. Even if they weren't born poor, they understand what it is to be discriminated against. They are aware of aspects of American life that most whites just don't see.
