In some ways the idea that race or color correlates with ideas is frightening. For very different reasons this idea is attractive to both white racists and some black activists. It appeals to an old stereotype that tells us that all black people think alike. That just isn't true.

Both groups are fighting against history. No matter how much some activists tell us that all blacks occupy the same status or have the same problems or suffer the same oppression, the fact is that the black population is increasingly stratified economically and educationally. As a result, they will not have the same ideas. That may be a problem for people who want to organize blacks as an interest group, but it's a victory for those who want to think of black people as individuals.
