But that's an argument based on compensation for past injustice. We've talked about that. I agree with you that something should be done on that basis, but that's not what we're talking about now.

The diversity argument at issue here is based on utilitarian claims.

The claim is that there are benefits that derive from bringing in groups that are poorly represented. It's a different argument. I think Fred is right that it tends to be a bit rhetorical, but that's true of all hotly debated social issues. Still, the question remains: What are the benefits that might flow from greater racial diversity in schools and businesses? And why should we focus on racial diversity rather than, say, religious diversity?
