And there is an even broader issue at stake. Some of the utilitarian arguments for affirmative action are aimed at reducing inequality of income. That sounds good. Who can be against more equality?
But we should ask ourselves what role the government should play in shaping and molding society. Do we want the distribution of income controlled by government? Or do we want it determined by the voluntary choices of individuals?
Remember: Today the state may favor the distribution you like, but 10 years from now it may favor the one you hate!
