But if we aren't talking about compensation, why should the government be concerned about the kinds of issues you are raising? Especially if, as I think, there are market solutions.
If someone has been treated unjustly, then I agree that the government has a role to play in punishing whoever did it. They may even have a role in making the victim whole. But if compensation is not the issue, is it the proper role of government to subsidize the training of the unemployed or to create jobs for them?
This is a fundamental issue. What is the proper role of government in guaranteeing welfare?
