I agree. Distinctions based on race have caused so much harm in this country that it's best for the government not to use them.

But the government could develop affirmative action programs based not on race but on personal or family income --or perhaps on educational level or length of unemployment.

People who fall into some mix of these categories --let's say the poor and badly educated-- could be given preference for training programs and school admissions.
