Bravo! I agree completely.
Utility is a fickle master. It may well be that American slavery could have been justified on the basis of utility. Maybe the economic development of the country was accelerated enough by slavery to make most people better off. Does that make it right? Of course not. Black Americans, of all people, should be wary of utilitarianism.
Slavery could never be justified if we accept a solid theory of human rights that stresses primarily the rights to liberty and property.
