I prefer to focus on the fact that the labor of black slaves helped build up this country, but I will also reinforce the argument you're making.

For decades white people had a monopoly on all the better paying jobs. They were able to acquire property and to send their children to the better schools. So when their children went into the labor market and competed for jobs, they had all the advantages. At the same time, black parents could not afford the better schools (which did not admit many blacks anyway). So of course their children were not as well educated. The advantages on one side and the disadvantages on the other tend to increase. Discrimination harms far more people than those initially discriminated against. The others deserve compensation too.
