When you consider the extent of the discrimination and harm that has occurred, I think it can justify all three levels of affirmative action: weak, moderate, and strong. But we should focus our discussion on the strong programs because they are the most controversial.
We should interpret the principle of compensation broadly so that it is not limited to just the people who are DIRECTLY harmed by discriminatory acts. The harm done by discrimination extends far beyond the person initially discriminated against. It INDIRECTLY harms others. This is especially true in families. Because the harm tends to go beyond the people first affected, nearly all black people in America --including young ones today-- have been harmed by discrimination.
