You're absolutely right. But that sort of affirmative action has been accepted by everyone, and it's not really an issue today. Look, you know me pretty well. In 1776, I probably would have wanted to stay with the king. But I support the kind of action you describe completely. The problem is with the more radical stuff, the kind of thing that ends up forcing employers to hire people to meet quotas. The kind of thing that keeps an employer from hiring someone who is clearly better qualified but not the right color or sex. That's what strong affirmative action really means and that's what I'm against.
