This is a perfectly legitimate use of statistics within the context of a strong affirmative action plan, but I don't want to confuse it with the compensation we were talking about before.

There are two different kinds of compensation at issue here. The first is compensation for past injustice (to an individual or to members of a group). That kind of compensation could help individual black people come out ahead of where they would be in a color-blind system. The second kind of compensation is for current discrimination. It is designed to make results match those of a color-blind system.

I don't want to give you nightmares, Fred, but I support both.
