Why do we just assume that a merit system is MORALLY the best way to hire people? How do we know? Maybe it is the most efficient way, but if we're talking about morality, aren't there other concerns?

What about need? Is it wrong to hire a person who has a family to support instead of someone who doesn't? What about desert? Is it wrong to hire a veteran because of his services? What about consequences? What if meritocracy creates a really unequal income distribution? Does that matter? Maybe some jobs should be filled at random in order to reduce the advantages of birth? Do we deserve those advantages?

How do we know that a merit system is morally better than all the alternatives?
