I think the analogy to stealing works well, especially if we focus on the period of slavery. What was slavery except taking away someone's liberty and then, to top it off, forcing them to work and taking the product of their labor. It's hard to calculate what you should give someone for taking away their liberty; but, as far as labor is concerned, we're looking at something concrete, the product of the labor. It was worth something, and that something should be given back. That seems obvious. Affirmative action is a way of doing just that.
