Law and Morality

At first glance it may seem that if abortion is morally wrong then the law should forbid it. But the relationship between law and morality is more complex.

Some actions are generally considered wrong, but we do not have laws against them. We have no laws against lying, for example. In many cases we believe that it is better to persuade than to coerce. We leave many moral issues to private parties. Many things that are illegal are not, in themselves, immoral. Driving on the left side of the road is one example.

Furthermore, there is much disagreement about what is or is not morally wrong. What should the law say in such cases?
