Obligations?

It may be useful to think about obligations as well as rights. How do obligations arise? How might this apply to a parent?

  • Some obligations arise because another party has a right that we must respect, and that right may be quite independent of our actions.
  • Some obligations arise because we make agreements with others (e.g., promises, contracts, etc.).
  • Perhaps some obligations (and corresponding rights) arise because of actions we take other than making promises or contracts. If I bring a sick person into my home and begin to care for him, do I acquire moral obligations to that person even though I have not made a promise or a contract?

Do any of these possibilities apply to a mother (or a father) and child?
