It may be useful to think about obligations as well as rights. How do obligations arise? How might this apply to a parent?

Some obligations arise because another party has a right that we must respect, and that right may be quite independent of our actions. Some obligations arise because we make agreements with others (e.g., promises, contracts, etc.). Perhaps some obligations (and corresponding rights) arise because of actions we take other than making promises or contracts. If I bring a sick person into my home and begin to care for him, do I acquire moral obligations to that person even though I have not made a promise or a contract?

Do any of these possibilities apply to a mother (or a father) and child?
