Abortion Rights And Wrongs

What is Relevant?

Assuming that the rights and obligations of both parties must be considered, what factors are relevant? Here are some possibilities:

  • The content of the rights (e.g., a right to life including A, B, C, etc.) and their inherent limits
  • The comparative weight or strength of the various rights.
  • The mother's degree of responsibility for pregnancy (extending from rape at one extreme to the use of fertility enhancing drugs at the other).
  • The gravity of her reasons for seeking an abortion (including any threat to her life/health/well being, loss of freedom, and so on).
  • Whether the child is killed directly or indirectly. (For example, whether the abortion directly kills or merely allows the child to die.)
  • Whether abortion is the least harmful way for the mother to exercise her right to control her body or defend herself.
  • Whether abortion is in the interest of the mother, the child, or both.

Can you relate these factors (or others that you think of) in a principled way?
