From a purely secular point of view, people are the most valuable beings of which we are aware. The embryo may not be a person, but it is the only known being that can become a person. As such, it too has enormous value.

Rights are moral devices established to protect valuable beings from harm. Thus, we attribute rights to people in order to protect them from being tortured or killed. Out of consistency, we ought to extend the same or nearly the same rights and protections to potential people because of their value. Again, the conclusion is that abortion is wrong except when there is a very good reason to allow it (perhaps where an fully developed person's right to life conflicts with that of the embryo or fetus).
