Abortion Rights And Wrongs

A Feminist Approach

Feminist theologian Beverly Harrison begins with a view of history. In her view, there has often been a struggle to control women's capacity to reproduce. In general, Christianity has gradually accepted and celebrated our increasing capacity to control our lives, but has stopped short of endorsing abortion as a means by which women can control their reproductive capacity.

At the same time, control over this capacity is of extraordinary importance to women if they are to be able to shape their lives. In our time, Harrison believes, the struggle "aimed at transforming the social relations that damage women's lives, is historically urgent." In her view, it is in the context of this history and the current need to improve the well-being of women that the morality of abortion and social policies on abortion should be considered.
