Anyone who considers the older fetus to be only a potential person
must ask what this implies for the morality of infanticide. For
those who are against most abortions, this is not a problem. They
will also be against infanticide. On the other hand, those who
would allow late abortions must either (1) show a morally relevant
difference between the fetus and an infant, or (2) accept infanticide
under conditions similar to those that justify late abortion.
Some of those who defend the morality of late abortions are willing
to do this. But most regard it as a problem.
You don't have to have a response to this problem right now, but you will have to consider it if you end up taking a liberal position on late abortions.
