We usually think that once we establish equal opportunity, however that should be defined, people are entitled to whatever rewards they receive from using those opportunities. If everyone has an equal opportunity to go to college, then its OK for college graduates to enjoy the rewards of a college degree. Rawls objects to this view. He claims that we don't deserve the intelligence or even the good character that it requires to work hard and go to Harvard. Therefore, we don't deserve the rewards that it brings. Instead, he argues that we ought always to arrange basic social institutions so that any increases in inequality provide some benefit for the least well off people. Only then are those who receive more entitled to what they receive.
