There has been great evolution from classical to welfare liberalism, but we should keep going. We could call this going beyond liberal society or we could call it evolving to a new form of liberal society. I prefer the former.

I have said several times that liberals do not see the extent to which substantive equality is a necessary condition for effective freedom. If we want equal freedom, we have to become a society that guarantees the necessary substantive equality. I think this change is incompatible with the essence of the liberal tradition. (It is certainly incompatible with the classic liberal tradition.) Therefore, I think we should call the new ideal society something else: a social egalitarian society.
