Malik is right about slavery and Jim Crow laws - but those things
were recognized as great flaws by liberals. Since then we have
both redefined and extended liberal rights and freedoms to blacks
and women. Slavery and Jim Crow have been abolished. Discrimination
in employment against blacks and women is illegal even if it still
exists. Freedom of speech and freedom of association have been
greatly extended and were a great help to African Americans
in the civil rights movement.
In light of this progress, it would be foolish to throw out liberalism
and liberal society because of the events and institutions of the
19th and early 20th century.
