I'm not willing to give up that easily, because I think too much is at stake. One way to put it is to say that our "vision" of society is on the line. Another way to put it is to say that basic principles of social organization are at issue. Here's my view of our situation after Doe:

That's the lesson here: Not just balancing, but reformulating the basic ethical principles on which society is based with the participation of the people who have been excluded from the club.

Up until now, our society has been based on a philosophical liberalism. We live in one kind of a liberal society. If you want my boxtop view, I think that liberalism and liberal society can no longer cope with the problems we face and they need to be transcended.
