Devin may be wrong and offensive, but there is no proof that his views on race harm his black students by lowering their performance. Even if his expectations are low, the effect may be just the opposite of what you suggest. I have a friend who took his class. She's black, and she was so angry at what he said that she worked her head off to prove him wrong. She got an 'A.'

And there is something else we have to understand about Devin. He doesn't believe that his views on race imply anything about the intelligence of any particular individual. He uses them to support his view that we should judge each individual by his or her achievements. In that sense, he's not against black students. But he probably is against the affirmative action policy that the university has adopted.
