It seems to me that there is some room for a compromise here. We have to distinguish between teaching scientific racism as in The Bell Curve, which Devin does, and making racist attacks on individual students, which he does not.

I think that the university should seriously consider a speech code that prohibits personal attacks or harassment of any kind. The same thing could be said about teaching in the classroom. Nothing in Devin's contract protects him if he makes intense, personal attacks on students in his class based on race or sex or anything else. I think the university could legitimately look into that possibility. But there is no reason to believe that Devin does that.

As long as he teaches scientific racism in the ordinary way that professors teach sociology, he should be protected by his contract and by the university policy on academic freedom.
