I suppose that everyone has heard about what's happening with Professor Devin. The administration is obviously trying to get rid of him, and he's suing the university for breach of contract and for violating his First Amendment rights.

I've got a friend who took Devin's social problems class last term. He's a real fruit cake. He loves Charles Murray and rambles on about blacks being less intelligent than whites and all that. As a matter of fact, I heard that he wants to get Murray to come to campus and speak.

Anyhow, I think this raises a lot of questions.

• Is Devin violating the new speech code?
• Are some of his students violating the code by agreeing with him in or out of class?
• Are his students being harmed?
• Should people like Devin be protected by policies guaranteeing academic freedom and tenure?
