I don't trust abstract theories of rights. I'm a conservative, not a libertarian. I like Edmund Burke, not Robert Nozick. My conservatism has two foundations:

• What grows slowly out of the best traditions of the American people, including our understanding of liberty.
  
• What is needed to maintain stability and order, which I believe is necessary for any valuable tradition of liberty to survive.

I'm not against change, but I think that social rules and social change should grow slowly and organically out of our best traditions.
