I don't think a code like the one we have will turn the campus
into Utopia overnight. But I do think that it will do some good.
- It symbolizes a commitment on the part of this university to fight racism on campus. Symbols can be powerful. For example, this symbol assures African American applicants that this university is on their side and wants them to come to this campus.
- It sends a message to students and others that this university regards racism and sexism as wrong, and that they have no place in the university community.
- It will improve the educational opportunities for African American students by reducing the number of racist incidents on campus. The atmosphere will improve. Students will be able to concentrate on their studies and not be afraid of harassment.
- Combined with the right kind of educational experience, it will help all of the students become more sensitive to and more respectful of ethnic and cultural differences on campus. That will help them here and when they are working in the larger society.
